History of Bundi

The area around the current Bundi is said to be once inhabited by various local tribes. The name Bundi is believed to be derived from one of the tribal heads named Bunda Meena. For some time, Bundi was also known as Bunda Ka Nal, which means narrow ways. in the 14th century, Bundi was taken over by Rao Deva Hada and the surrounding placed were named Hadoti – The Land of Hada Rajputs after him.

Bundi is situated at a distance of 35 kms from the famous city of Kota and at a distance of 210 kms from the State capital of Jaipur. This city is located on a height of 268 m from the sea level and is surrounded by the Arravalli hills on 3 sides. This city is a natural fort and a huge wall encircles the city to protect it.

Stepwells Bundi

One very unique feature of the Bundi city is its Step Wells. These structures were created by the ancient civilizations where several people can easily go down to fetch water and could also do their chores on the mini ghats (platform). These wells are enormous in size and deep as well, being the only source of water of the city. Step wells are also considered to be the earliest form of rain water harvesting, where their depth played the way to collect rain. Bundi has 50 stepwells, of which, a few are in very good condition. Today, some of them are used as garbage dumps despite of their historic importance.
